Steubenville: A closeted town EIGEN

by Carl Howard

Steubenville is low-key and transient commuter-oriented and and largerly a closeted community.

This small southeastern Ohio city is located on the banks of the Ohio River which forms the border between Ohio and West Virginia at that point. It is approximately 45-50 miles north of

Wheeling and about 90 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The steel and coal mining industries control the economy and many gays as well as "straights" are thus employed by one of the several coal or steel companies.

This, along with the smallness of the city, contributes to the

transient/commuter mentality. It is not unusual for Steubenville people to drive miles to and from work and then drive great distances to shop or socialize.

Pittsburgh is the nearest large city and is very accessible by freeway. Consequently, it attracts numerous Steubenvillearea people to its many bars, theaters and restaurants.

Because of the industrial econ-

omy, relatively small city and intolerant attitudes toward homosexuality, the gay population is not cohesive or readily visible. Gay social services are not available except through Pittsburgh. This situation along with Pittsburgh's larger, more open gay population gives that city the edge and further draws Steubenville and surrounding area gays to it.

to remain near home, DAVID'S LOUNGE, 160 N. 4th Street, is the bar in Steubenville. It is interesting and pleasant in appearance and up-keep and predictably busy on weekends. The music is good and a large dance floor provides ample room for disco-dancing. Two game rooms are available for those wanting pool and pinball. The people are friendly and very attractive. Partying at the bar is

However, for those who want generally good.

My Dear Friends:

Some four thousand years ago, our Lord created the earth. The first man and woman were our parents. We are all Brothers and Sisters in God's eyes. According to St. John, Jesus said, "Love thy brother and sister as thy love thy self." Also in St. John, Jesus said "Abide in My Love, as I abide in the Father's love." Let's all love one another as Brothers and Sisters.

Our sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln said at the end of his Gettysburg address, "All men are created equal." Which we are. So let us as brothers and sisters pull together and Unite.
